The Effect of Covering Time on Growth and Yield of Strawberry

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate covering time and superior varieties for semi-forcing cultivation and tunnel cultivation of strawberry in southern region in Korea.
The results are summarized as follows.
1. Trials for semi-forcing cultivation.
This trials was conducted using 3 varieties (Hokowase, Kogyoku and Armore) and the house was covered with polyethlene film on Dec. 10, Dec. 25 and Jan. 10.
The earlier the date of covering, earlier much more the first time of flower and harvest. Among the using varieties, Hokowase was proved most early mature variety and produced high yield at the early stage, so the variety could be harvested fruit from Mar. 1 in plot covering on Dec. 10, and from Mar. 4 in plot covering on Dec. 25.
Respectially, plot covering on Dec. 25 produced more early yield and total yield than other covering times plots.
2. Trials for tunnel cultivation.
With using 3 varieties (Hokowase, Armore and Marshall), polyethylene film covered on tunnel on Jan. 15, Jan. 25, Feb. 5, and non-covering plot was placed in order to compare with covering plots.
The earlier the date of covering, earlier much more the first time of flower and harvest, so the plot covering on Jan. 15 could be harvested fruit 31 days earlier than noncovering plot.
The latter the date of covering, on the other hand, the higher the percentage of fruit setting and more increase the weight per a fruit. Also, the length of days for mature fruit became shorter. In yield, Hokowase of the plot covering on Jan. 25 produced highest yield at the early stags. But midlle and total yield was highest in Armore variety of the plot covering on Feb. 15.
3. According to the results mentioned above, Hogowase was presumed to be superior variety for semi-forcing and tunnel cultivation in southern in Korea.
It was appropriated that covering was conducted on Dec. 25 for semi-forcing cultivation, and on Jan. 25 for tunnel cultivation.
